Erosion
Substantial erosion has occurred over the past 20 or so years, and particularly in the past three years.
Mitigation works have been undertaken along the eastern shore of Kuratau with compacted sand and tracks, and a rock revetment (covered by sand). It is hoped these are temporary works with Taupō District Council (TDC) and community representatives all working together on permanent solutions.
If you have an issue to report regarding erosion or the erosion works, please contact OKRA-Kuratau Erosion Committee’s Angela Salmon angela@asalmon.co.nz or TDC info@taupo.govt.nz 07 376 0899

Parks & Reserves
Our local parks and reserves are managed by Taupō District Council (TDC). They maintain these areas including access to, planting, and mowing.
It is worth noting:
-
The path access just back from the shore line between Omori and Kuratau is deliberately not cleared (and asked not to be cleared) to enable build-up of vegetation to mitigate the erosion of both the cliffs and waterfront. It is hoped in a few years a proper track will be built.
-
The reserve along the Kuratau eastern shore is effectively ‘under repair’ for the foreseeable future while the erosion issue is sorted. Once this is complete the reserve will be replanted and beautified.
Water, Stormwater & Wastewater Infrastructure
The water pipeline replacement has been completed on Omori Road which will give greater resilience and already better tasting water!
Work has started on the Water Treatment Plant adjacent to the Omori Hall – it is a major project and expected to be completed mid-2025.
Boat Ramps
Boat ramps are at both Omori and Kuratau and are managed by the Harbour Master (Department of Internal Affairs – DIA). A permit is required to use these.
For more information and to buy the ramp permit click here
The ramps are regularly cleared of sand build up.
Fishing
You need a specific licence to fish in Lake Taupō and its surrounding rivers. You can buy your licence here
Rubbish & Recycling
Kerbside Collection
Please help out TDC’s hardworking contractors by following these quick tips for your weekly rubbish collection:
-
Have your rubbish and recycling kerbside by 7.30am on Monday - the day of collection for Omori, Kuratau and Pukawa.
-
At holiday time collections are likely to run later in the day than usual and at times, may extend into the following day so if your rubbish or recycling hasn't been picked up you can leave it out for collection the next morning.
-
Separate your recycling into three product streams, using three different bins (more info below).
-
Remember, only plastic types 1, 2 and 5 can be recycled - all other plastic goes in the rubbish.
-
Flatten cardboard boxes and remove lids from washed plastic bottles.
Rubbish Bags
-
Rubbish bags must be no bigger than 60 litres
-
A pre-paid orange sticker must be on every rubbish bag, unless it is a yellow Enviro NZ prepaid bag. These can be bought at the Omori Store and New World in Turangi.
-
There is no limit to the number of rubbish bags you can put out for collection, as long as the bags used are not bigger than 60 litres and each bag has an orange sticker applied
-
Leave bags and bins as close as you can to the kerbside and clear of the footpath
-
Wrap any broken glass or sharp objects thoroughly before putting them in your refuse bag
-
Two smaller plastic bags or bag liners (30 litres maximum combined) tied together will be accepted with half an orange sticker
-
If refuse bags or recyclable items are placed out for removal and do not, for any reason, comply with what is allowed, the contractor shall apply a sticker stating why they do not comply.
Changes to kerbside recycling
From Thursday 1 February 2024 there are a few little changes being made to the way we recycle, in line with new nationwide guidelines introduced by the Ministry for the Environment:
-
No lids or caps in your recycling
-
No containers larger than 4 litres in your recycling
-
No items under 5cm x 5cm in your recycling
-
If you have a cleaned tin can, and the lid is still attached, it can be recycled if you push the lid fully inside the tin. This helps keep our team safe.
-
All glass must be in a TDC recycling bin and separate from all other recyclables.
